Video Heartbeat Video (06:58), 2015 Heartbeat records events witnessed while visiting Resolute with Canadian Forces Op Nanook, CF Sovereignty Operations in the North, as artist with the Canadian Forces Artists Program in 2013. Activities reveal a background of colonialism and resettlement from the time of the High Arctic Relocation in 1953-55, when families from two disparate communities, Pond Inlet on Baffin Island, and Inukjuak on Hudson Bay, were forcibly relocated to Resolute’s barren shore. The trauma experienced by the families, left on the shore with no shelter or food, and their resilience in the face of such a violation of human rights, are symbolically represented by the fortuitous presence of the heart of a Greenland Shark, still beating hours after the shark died after being attacked by another shark.
